Have you ever seen a friend or family member wear a piece of jewelry and wonder if it is a fashion statement or if it represents something more personal? Over the years, I have come to realize many of my family and friends identify with a piece of jewelry… to the point that the never go out in public without it. I have always worn some type of talisman. A “talisman” is defined as an object which is believed to contain properties which will provide luck, avert evil and bring good fortune.
I hand-sculpted the silver angel wing I wear in remembrance of my mother. I wear this necklace every day; somehow, I feel stronger knowing it represents something special. It reminds me my Mom is ever-present and watching over me. I also watched my husband, without fail every morning before putting on his military uniform, place his necklace with his personal talisman around his neck. He never walked out of the house without it. His talisman makes him feel safe, protected and complete. A family member battling MS wears a butterfly I created with the words “I am courageous” inscribed on the back. She wears it to serve as a gentle reminder she can do it today no matter how she feels or the obstacles she has to face!
A talisman is usually a piece of jewelry, but not always. My daughter has a pumpkin hidden in a tree in her yard. When asked why, her reply is “he protects my yard and home”.
Last week I attended a charity event to raise funds for the Animal League Defense Fund (ALDF); this is a nationwide event that helps introduce anti-cruelty legislation, supports law enforcement agencies to convict animal abusers, and to support law firms filing lawsuits on behalf of animals. I silently watched many people – friends, family and strangers – come in and start conversations about how wonderful our pets are and what a great cause ALDF is for raising funds to stop animal cruelty. Some people in attendance were wearing my signature angel wing. One dear friend told me “I cannot be without it”.
A friend who purchased an angel wing from me called in a panic when she broke her chain and was leaving town but would not leave without her wing. She asked for help. I met her in town with a new chain for her wing, which she promptly placed around her neck.
I work exclusively with Michelle and Larry, the owners Paws Pet Boutique in Annapolis, to create a talisman for people and pets. I have received many kind words from customers letting me know that a small talisman such as an angel wing, a paw print, an “initial” charm, or a soul mate charm provide comfort and strength for the wearer… whether the pet is still with us or not. My wish for you is faith, hope and love. And I hope you find comfort when wearing your favorite talisman whatever it may be.
